Palavras-Chave | evapotranspiration sensible heat flux eddy covariance soil moisture floodplain savanna Amazonia Bananal Island |
Resumo | We describe hydrometeorological processes in a seasonal floodplain area with savanna vegetation, near the Bananal Island region, Brasil, within the transition zone of forest savanna in eastern Amazonia. Measurements included climatological variables, evapotranspiration and sensible heat flux, 3 m depth soil moisture profile, groundwater and flood height. Continuous measurements of eddy covariance over a 42 m tower and ground observations were taken during November 2003 to December 2006. The increasing evapotranspiration in the wet season and particularly in the flood period showed how there the free surface water dominated the energy exchanges. In opposition, evapotranspiration decreased, despite the simultaneous increasing net radiation, air temperature and water vapour deficit, that did not explain sufficiently the losses of water to the atmosphere. On the other hand, the turbulent mixing, the status of soil moisture, that depleted substantially during the dry season, and adaptive mechanisms of the vegetation contributted in larger extensions to limit evapotranspiration. The vegetation over these floodplain forests in Amazonia can erroneously be thought as ecosystems that have abundant water availability. Despite the plenty of water in the rainy season, the soil moisture status in the dry season showed only a tiny memory of the floodtime. Strong drainage within very permeable sandy soils helped to explain the depletioning. As long as it is expected the savanna vegetation is adapted to such strong seasonal oscilation, in anomalous dry years where the hydrological pulse is weak, the response of the vegetation as a source for evapotranspiration may be strongly affected in long dry spells. |
